Staying Sober with Squad Goals: Tips for Fun Outings Without the Buzz

Updated: Jul 15

Going out with friends is a great way to unwind and socialize. But if you're on the path to sobriety, navigating social settings with alcohol can be tough. Here are some tips to help you stay strong and have a blast without the pressure to drink:

Before You Go:

●     Set the Intention: Remind yourself why you're choosing sobriety. Visualize the positive outcomes of a clearheaded night.

●     Plan the Hangout: Suggest activities that don't center around drinking. Think bowling, board games, a concert, or exploring a new part of town.

●     Buddy Up: Going with a sober friend can provide support and accountability.

●     Communicate: Let your friends know you're not drinking. A simple "I'm taking a break from alcohol" is enough.

At the Outing:

●     Hydration Hero: Keep a non-alcoholic drink in hand throughout the night. Mocktails, sparkling water with fruit, or even just plain water are great options.

●     The Exit Strategy: Decide on a safe exit plan beforehand. If you feel pressured or uncomfortable, have a trusted friend on call who can pick you up or simply excuse yourself politely. You may want to drive yourself and meet-up.

●     Shift the Focus: Engage in meaningful conversations or fun activities. Laughter is the best medicine, and it doesn't require alcohol.

●     Be a Support System: If your friends are drinking, focus on being a good listener and offering support.

Remember:

●     Your Choice, Your Night: Don't let peer pressure sway you. It's your night, and you have the power to choose how you want to spend it.

●     Celebrate Your Strength: Be proud of your commitment to sobriety. Every night you stay strong is a victory!

●     Seek Support: If cravings hit, reach out to a sponsor, therapist, or a support group hotline.

Bonus Tip: Sometimes, taking a break from certain environments might be necessary. If a bar or club is too tempting, suggest alternative locations.

Staying sober doesn't mean sacrificing fun with friends. With a little planning and self-awareness, you can create amazing memories that don't involve alcohol. You got this!
