October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

The relationship between addiction and domestic violence is complex and multifaceted. Addiction can be a contributing factor to domestic violence, and domestic violence can also lead to addiction. It is important to understand this relationship in order to break the cycle of violence.

How Addiction Can Lead to Domestic Violence

When a person is addicted to drugs or alcohol, they may experience changes in their behavior that can lead to domestic violence. These changes can include:

  • Increased aggression

  • Impaired judgment

  • Loss of inhibitions

  • Difficulty controlling impulses

These changes can make it more likely for a person to engage in abusive behavior, even if they are not typically violent.

How Domestic Violence Can Lead to Addiction

Domestic violence can also lead to addiction. Victims of domestic violence may turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with the trauma they have experienced. This is known as self-medication.

The Cycle of Violence
